Hey Emily,

Ive been living in Iquitos for about 8 months. You might consider this. Spend 3 or 4 nights in the jungle at a lodge. Travel 3 nights to Yurimagua on the Maranon river (I have it is great). Travel by launch and book passage in a 'camarota' a small cabin with bunk beds. It costs about $50 (S/.150) per person including 3 very basic meals. The hammocks are less by about 15 bucks but you need to watch out for thieves of opportunity. Cabins lock. In Yurmiagua you can head west via shared car or bus to different interesting cities--2 to 4 hours of travel. I liked Rioja as a small town with lots of interesting day trips and close to Moyobomba which also has some interesting day trips. I went through Tarapoto but did not stop. It is said to have some interesting stuff too. The trips west go over some beautiful mountains. You can fly out of Tarapoto to Lima when you are done. Or get very adventurous and take the 15hr bus ride to Piura and the coast where the beaches are. I like Mancora, about 3 hours from Piura, the most famous which has great surfing and warm waters for swiming. Buses to lima and other beaches along the coast are plentiful. You could also do the reverse and start on the west coast and make your way to Iquitos via Yurimagua and the rio Maranon.

Have a great trip.
