The Two Sides
The Two Sides
| 1. Niche - Relevance (Their Experience of the Effect) “That’s me!” | 2. Point of View - Credibility (Your Perspective of the Cause) “That makes sense!” | |
| What’s Going On? | Island A: They live a monotonous, boring life. They want more spice and adventure, but don’t know how to get it. They work a dead end job. They want a love that fills their heart but are unable to hold onto a partner (or meet one who’s at their level). They know that they want more out of their lives, but not quite sure how to break out of the rut. They might have a broken heart, and might feel lost or hopeless. They keep repeating the same habits (same job, attracting the same kind of person in their relationships) and don’t know how to break out of them (even if they want to). They have a gnawing feeling that if they keep living like this, that they’ll die sad, depressed, and lonely, but they don’t know how to change anything. They say to themselves “there has to be more to life than this”. | Diagnosis (Your Map): Fear IS the key. Whatever we fear, if we were to lean in that direction and not away from, we’d find breakthroughs. This looks like taking a risk and talking to the woman you’ve always wanted to. Or, asking for that raise. What’s holding us back is our fear of being true to ourselves, at the expense of catering to others. We please others, and we leave our own desires at the door. What’s really going on is that we’re so conditioned to follow that we stop leading ourselves and our lives the way we truly want to. We all have a hero in us, but more often than not, we let the hero sleep so the NPC can live. |
| Want | Island B: These people want to feel more alive in their bones. They want to feel more fulfilled. They wake up not dreading the day, but excited. They go to sleep feeling full and content and proud of what they’ve done. They are connecting with their lover more intentionally, and with more heart. They’re having more sex. They’re connected to themselves more, and also to nature. They have regular practice with their own mind, breath, and body. They feel like they have a community that they can lean on, and that they’re here on this earth to create something. | + Prognosis (Island C): They feel well used by life. They feel like they’ve lived a life they can write a book about. They feel like they’ve loved someone so deeply that it can be made into a movie. That they’ve lived such a full life that their children and grandchildren will share stories about long after they’re gone. That they won’t be forgotten, but remembered. |
| Fear | Island Z: They will die sad, miserable, and lonely. They will be full of misery, jealousy, anger, and hatred. | – Prognosis (The Jagged Reefs): They’ll succumb to addictions. They might not court a relationship. They might end up doing the same dead end job for the rest of their lives. They might never feel connected to anything, or anyone. |
| Fix | Past Attempts: They might have tried different drugs. They might have tried self help books, or workshops. | Prescription (Your Compass & Route): What’s really needed is a compassionate, but direct conversation with themselves. Is what they’ve done so far sustainable? How willing are they to leave everything behind? Can they start over? Can they be comfortable with the unknown? A total shift in personal identity and embodiment. Who they want to be IS who they are. |
