Breaking False Beliefs

What are the biggest misconceptions or false beliefs people have about your niche or area of expertise? Beliefs determine our actions, so as a leader who wants to help people head in a better direction, it's important to learn how to shift people's beliefs.

First, consider the following types of beliefs people might have. The people you're here to serve likely have beliefs about:

  • Themselves and their ability to succeed.
  • How much opportunity is available to them.
  • How they will be perceived by others if they take a certain path.
  • Someone or something else suppressing their ability.
  • Whether or not the effort to achieve something will be worthwhile.
  • Whether or not something is even possible (or practical) for them.
  • A certain path being better than another (even if it's really not).
  • How difficult something is going to be.
  • How much time something is going to take.
  • What failure or success means about them.
  • Their own worthiness or qualifications.
  • The meaning of money or success.

Ways to Shift Beliefs Here are some of the ways you can help people shift their beliefs in a positive direction so they are encouraged to take action:

  • Tell a story about how you or someone else used to believe one thing and how you/they came to the realization that there was a better way to view things.
  • Tell a story about someone else who achieved something, and then highlight how this person was very ordinary and didn't have any great advantages that made them any more capable than the next person
  • Show people how getting what they want can be a lot easier or less time-consuming than they might believe.
  • Show the hidden downsides of a particular path they might be on, and then provide the positive alternative they might have never considered.
  • Make a complex process seem more simple and achievable by displaying it in some sort of framework or roadmap that someone could follow to reach their desired outcome.
  • Show them that the common (often unpleasant) way of doing things isn’t the only option. Give them an “aha” moment when they realize they can achieve their goal in a way that is more aligned and enjoyable to them.
  • Give them a shortcut to overcome their belief that it will take too long to achieve their desired outcome. Create a product or service that shaves significant amounts of time off the process.
  • Help them see the positive side of what they might normally see as negative (e.g. how making lots of money doesn’t make you greedy but rather gives you more time and resources to serve others).
